Description: |
Shy pale duck. Grayish-brown overall dappled with yellowish-white spots and bars. Dark patch around eye. Male has a short uneven crest erected during courtship displays. |
Behavior: |
Usually seen in pairs or small groups close to cover. Swims with front part of body held low and tail slightly cocked. |
Habitat: |
Small ponds and marshes bordered by emergent vegetation. |
Food: |
Aquatic vegetation and invertebrates. |
Nest: |
Platform of grass lined with down concealed at edge of water. |
Eggs: |
46 mm, 7-14, pale cream. |
