Description: |
Brownish upperparts with extensive fine gray and black bars, largely white upperwings, and white underparts. |
Adult (Breeding): |
Male: gray face and chin; black neck with white V below chin and white half-collar at base of neck. Female: extensive streaks and dots on head, neck, and upperparts. |
Adult (Non-breeding): |
Males similar to female but with whiter less-marked flanks. |
Similar Species: |
Differs from other bustards by small size and mostly white upperwings. |
Behavior: |
In fall, feeds in cultivated fields. Visits ponds to drink. Wings of males make a whistling sound in flight. |
Habitat: |
Sage semideserts, mountain steppe. |
Food: |
Green plants, grains, insects. |
