Description: |
Big-headed plover with black axillaries visible in flight. Black bill is short, thick, and straight. |
Adult (Breeding): |
Black mantle with white bars and spots, black flanks and underparts, white undertail coverts and rump. |
Adult (Non-breeding): |
Gray speckled with dark and white above, grayish-white below. |
Juvenile: |
Pale edgings to brown-black feathers. Head, throat, breast, and flanks streaked with gray-brown. |
Similar Species: |
Eurasian Golden-Plover. |
Behavior: |
Feeds on mudflats, pausing for long periods between short fast runs. |
Habitat: |
Shallow lake shores, mudflats, cultivated fields. |
