Length:18-19 cm, Wing Span:32-41 cm

Description: Small black needle-like bill.
Adult: Gray head, breast, and upperparts. Chin and throat white with brown-orange collar; yellowish edges to scapulars. Female: brighter and more distinctly patterned than male. Shows broad white wing stripe and pale back stripes in flight.
Juvenile: Wide blackish eye patch. Black and yellow stripes on back; white underparts.
Behavior: Rapidly picks food from surface while swimming, often near shore. Short flights often flitting and erratic
Habitat: Small pools, ponds, and lakes.
Food: Invertebrates.
