Small black needle-like bill. |
Adult: |
Gray head, breast, and upperparts. Chin and throat white with brown-orange collar; yellowish edges to scapulars. Female: brighter and more distinctly patterned than male. Shows broad white wing stripe and pale back stripes in flight. |

Wide blackish eye patch. Black and yellow stripes on back; white underparts. |

Rapidly picks food from surface while swimming, often near shore. Short flights often flitting and erratic |
