Rounded head, dark eyes. Overall color varies from gray to red-brown. Typically gray with broad dark streaking on underparts; white spots above. Bill pale. Rare dark phase is dark orange-brown overall with gray bill. |

Behavior: |
Nocturnal. Song is two hoots followed by a pause, then an extended wavering hoot. |
