Description: |
Thick grayish bill. |
Adult (Breeding): |
Male varies from red to brown; typically having red head, breast, and rump, and pinkish flanks. Rare individuals may have red replaced by yellow. Female is pale gray-brown with streaked breast and two narrow off-white wingbars. |
Juvenile: |
Similar to female but darker with streaks on crown, back, and breast and pale brown-yellow wingbars. |
Behavior: |
On breeding territory, males sing frequently from prominent shrubs. |

Mountain steppe to alpine meadows with scattered shrubs. |

Seeds, small invertebrates. |
