Description: |
Dark wading bird with long decurved bill. Flies with neck extended. |
Adult (Breeding): |
Dark red-brown overall, glossed with purple and green. |
Adult (Non-breeding): |
Head and neck dull brown to black, streaked with white. |
Juvenile: |
Dull brown overall with faint greenish tint. Head and throat spotted with white. |
Similar Species: |
In flight, similar to Great Cormorant but has long decurved bill and long legs extending beyond tail. |
Behavior: |
Flies with rapid wingbeats alternating with long glides; flocks fly in wavering line or V-formation. Feeds by probing in mud and shallow water. |
Habitat: |
Lakes, marshes, river banks, wet meadows, fish ponds. |
Food: |
Worms, insects, crustaceans. |
Nest: |
Colonial; platform in reedbeds or willows. |
