Description: | Huge vulture with massive bill, short ruff of feathers on neck, short bluntly-pointed tail, and long broad even wings with dark underwing coverts. |
Adult: | Black-brown overall with gray-white head. |
Juvenile: | Blacker than adult. |
Behavior: | Soars at high altitudes on level wings. Aggressive and dominant at carcasses, often one individual occurs among other species of vultures. |
Habitat: | High mountains and river gorges. Prefers sunny areas with sparse vegetation. |
Food: | Carrion. |
Nest: | Sometimes colonial; large platform of branches lined with twigs, bark, manure, wool, food remnants, and bones in top of large tree or on cliff ledge. |
Eggs: | 90 mm, 1, off-white, red-brown blotches and lines. |
