Description: |
A distinctively long wide flattened bill. Male: green head, white neck and breast, red-brown belly, black undertail coverts. Female: mottled brown with orange-edged dark bill. Both sexes have pale blue forewing visible in flight. |
Behavior: |
Swims low in water with head near water surface. Often feeds in compact flocks. |
Habitat: |
Lakes with reeds and cattails, rivers, fish ponds. |

Aquatic vegetation, invertebrates. |
