Resident Status: Year-round resident
Abundance: Uncommon
Length:34-38 cm, Wing Span:58-64 cm

Description: Male: red-brown head with green eye patch, yellow and black undertail coverts. Female: brown with darker mottling and a narrow white stripe on the side of the tail. Both sexes show a green speculum in flight.
Behavior: Flight fast and silent; often feeds along shorelines.
Habitat: Lakes, marshes, rivers.
Food: Invertebrates, vegetation.
Nest: Cup of branches, dry grass, rotted plants, and down near water
Eggs: 45 mm, 8-11, yellow-white.
