Male: red bill, orange-brown head, black breast and undertail coverts, and white flanks. Female: brown with dark crown, off-white cheeks and throat. |

Up-ends more often than dives. Walks easily; may feed on land. |

Lakes bordered with reeds and sedges, marshes, rivers. |

Aquatic plants, invertebrates, small fish, amphibians. |

Ground scrape lined with grass and down in reeds or shrubs near water. |
